The popular societal movement in the city of Taiz continues for the third month in a row to demand the provision of services, combat corruption and address security imbalances.

The city witnesses popular youthful rallies, on Mondays and Thursdays every week, in which thousands of citizens participate under the framework of the "The Youthful Rise for Correction" and in which banners are raised calling for the fight against corruption and the dismissal of corrupt officials in the local authority.

The protesters took the front of the interim headquarters of the Governorate, located on Jamal Street, as their square, which they called “The Correction Square,” where they demonstrate and pray Fridays' prayers, and the field protest action coincided with media pressure on various social media to reject corruption.

The popular movement rose up to reject the deterioration of services, the collapse of the currency, the rise in the price of electricity and water, the accumulation of garbage in the streets and the lack of domestic gas, as well as to demand economic reforms.

The participants also demand to address the issue of the wounded in Taiz, who live in great suffering after sacrificing their blood and parts of their bodies in order to defend and liberate Taiz.

According to participants in the popular movement, the youthful rise for correction began with a demand to combat corruption in the offices of the revenue local authority, such as taxes, duties, electricity, water, hygiene, transportation, slaughterhouses, and others, sensing the situation in the city of Taiz, which has been besieged by the terrorist Houthi militia for seven years. This is a situation that calls for credibility, integrity, intensification of efforts and the preservation of public money.

They told the alislah-ye.net website that they continued to escalate when the local authority did not respond to their demands, so they had to go out to the streets and set up tents to demand the dismissal of the corrupt in the revenue offices, referring them to the judiciary for accountability and appointing honest personalities in their stead.

Although the governor of Taiz and some ministers issued decisions to change the directors of the offices of transportation, taxes, duties and electricity. Some of them were referred to the judiciary, but the participants in the revolutionary movement stressed that this is not enough, especially since these changes did not positively affect the performance and living reality in the city, warning at the same time against “selective changes that do not include all the corrupt.”

Activist Jayyaz Abdel Hamid spoke to the alislah-ye.net website, saying, "The truth is that the performance of some local authority officials in Taiz is devoid of any sense of responsibility and of the situation in Taiz, and far from any understanding of the nature of the national battle that calls for mobilizing efforts and energies, each official in his position."

He added: "I do not know how some officials go into corruption while they see the city besieged, and it is rained with shells on a daily basis."

Jayyaz stressed, "Our demand is the presence of a local authority that senses responsibility and supports the liberation battle by succeeding in its tasks and showing a positive model of the legitimacy and a bright image of Taiz."

They demanded an end to the security imbalances:

The societal movement in Taiz was not limited to the demand to combat corruption in the local authority only, but they also called on the security committee, headed by the governor of the Governorate, to address the security imbalances in the city and to control the rogue gangs and outlaws.

They also called on the leadership of the Taiz axis and the military police to deal firmly with all unruly individuals affiliated with the army, who abuse the sacrifices of the martyrs, the wounded, and the national army as a whole.

The position of political parties on the societal movement:

Following the start of the societal movement in Taiz, the branches of the political parties in the Governorate were quick to announce their support for the demands of the masses and their peaceful movement, stressing their rejection of corruption and calling for a course correction.

The Yemeni Islah Party in Taiz has announced its support for the demands of the street and its peaceful movement, calling for taking this opportunity to correct the path and reform the situation in a way that raises the performance of government offices, provides services and controls revenues from the tampering of corruption hands.

The Islah Party saluted the popular vigilance and the peaceful street movement that stands against all manifestations of corruption and the referral of the corrupt to the judiciary while allowing the popular and youth oversight to exercise its pressing role in this direction.

And the Islah Party called for the need for the government to play its role towards Taiz and its daily problems, with the need for supporting this corrective approach by the political and social forces and the various components in a way that ensures that institutions are cleansed of corruption and the accountability of persons or entities who have proven guilty, activating the role of service and revenue institutions and raising the level of their bid to serve the citizen and preserving resources, in a way that contributes to achieving the public interest and accelerating the completion of the liberation of the Governorate and breaking the siege on it.

As for the General People’s Congress in Taiz, it saluted the peaceful, popular and youthful movement in the city of Taiz in the face of corruption, drying up its sources, holding the corrupt accountable, imposing the prestige of the state, implementing the rule of law and eliminating all military, security and civil imbalances.

The Congress Party stressed the need for the various authorities to interact with these demands in accordance with the laws in force, warning at the same time against diverting these legitimate demands from their goals for political purposes or personal interests that harm the societal fabric of the people of Taiz and create tension at a time when Taiz needs more cohesion in the face of those who plot evil against Taiz and its honorable, heroic sons

While the Yemeni Socialist Party and the Nasserist People’s Unionist Organization branch in Taiz Governorate announced their support for the peaceful civil mass movement and their alignment with the interests of citizens, they also saluted the voices of the masses rejecting the spread of corruption practices and condemning the high prices, demanding the dismissal of everyone involved in corruption and referring him to the Public Funds Prosecution.

The popular movement will continue.

Activists in Taiz assert that the popular movement in the city will not stop until its goals represented in combating corruption are achieved and applying pressure to appoint competent figures known for their integrity and professionalism in the local authority and government administrative positions, preserving public money, providing services to the citizen, in addition to addressing security imbalances and missing the opportunity to all those who try to create chaos in the city."

They pointed out that some officials may quickly forget, or attempted to forget, that Taiz is the source of the revolution, and it is the bearer of the banner of resistance, but what is certain is that the free people in the Governorate have not been tired or bored, but rather they are resisting the Houthi pandemic and breaking it, while at the same time pressing for the provision of services and fixing security imbalances and combat corruption.
