The Rights Radar for Human Rights called for lifting the siege imposed by the Houthi militias on the population of Taiz city five years ago.

In a statement published on its website on Saturday, the Organization said that the city of Taiz lives in constant suffering due to the suffocating siege and the closure of the main passages by the Houthis, where the people of Taiz city are forced to take bumpy and narrow roads that subject their lives to endanger accidents, searches, extortion, harassment and sometimes to kidnapping and arrest at the Houthi checkpoints.

The organization added: “At a time when it was only a few minutes to reach the center of Taiz city and costs 100 Yemeni rials, It became takes more than 6 hours and costs about 5,000 riyals from the outskirts of the city only. The Houthi siege imposed on Taiz also caused high prices of goods due to the closure of the passages and roads leading to the city of Taiz due to the high cost of transportation, and also caused damage to various sectors and services and affected various aspects of life in Taiz."

The Rights Radar pointed out to that the head of the Committee of Opening Roads representing the internationally recognized government in Taiz governorate, the MP Abdul Karim Shaiban, announced that the Houthi representative Ghalib Mutlaq had communicated with him and told him that his group is about to open ports and roads leading to the city of Taiz, stressing that the local authority of Taiz welcomed this initiative and that It will deal with it positively and that it supports the ending of the suffering of the people of the city, but these promises have not been fulfilled and nothing has happened, where the city is still suffering because of the siege.

The Organization of Rights Radar had urged the Houthi militia to fulfill its promises and obligations towards civilians, calling on it to lift the siege of the city of Taiz, which considers a collective punishment, a crime against humanity and a war crime.

The Rights Radar called on the UN representative in Yemen, Martin Griffiths, to perform his role in pressuring the Houthi group to implement agreements related to lifting the siege on the city of Taiz.

It called on the Security Council, the United Nations and the international community to exert more efforts to put an end to the suffering of civilians in Taiz by opening the outlets and roads leading to the city from the east, north and west sides.

Last week, the local authority in Taiz announced the opening of the west and east of the city for its part. This comes in an advanced step that requires the Houthi group to open the two crossings on their part.

Nabil Shamsan, the governor of the governorate, said that once the Houthis officially announced and opened the crossings by their part, the crossings on our part will be ready because we are not closing the crossings and we have directed the leadership of the axis so.

In his briefing to the UN Security Council on Thursday, UN special envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths talked about the opening of the crossings in Taiz said that "Taiz deserves some good news so I hope an agreement will be reached following promises have been offered."
