Diphtheria and cholera outbreak in Ibb and swine influenza in Sana'a

A medical source said that more than fifty children died because of cholera and diphtheria in Ibb governorate 11 months ago in various Directorates of the governorate.

According to the source, who confirmed the registration of more than 50 deaths among children under the age of fifteen with cholera and diphtheria epidemic since last January until the end of November 2019.

The source reported that 38 cases of cholera deaths among children under the age of fifteen were recorded in various governorate Directorates, including children from outside the governorate.

The source added that two cases of deaths from the cholera epidemic among the displaced people from Taiz governorate and one case of death from the people of Dhamar governorate were recorded, at the time more than 37 thousand cases of suspected cholera were recorded in the various Directorates of the governorate.

The source reported that 16 cases of deaths among children under the age of fifteen were recorded in the diphtheria epidemic, six of which were from the governorate, six of which from the governorate of Taiz, two cases of deaths from al-Dali' governorate, and two deaths from the people of al-Hodeidah governorate.

The number of cases infected with the disease diphtheria during the past 11 months was 90 cases, in addition to other injuries that were not recorded and were unable to reach medical centers and hospitals to receive treatment as a result of the deteriorating financial and economic conditions and their inability to purchase medicines.

The spread of the epidemic coincided with the major collapse in the health system in the governorate, which is controlled by the Houthi militia.

The Houthi militia is practicing restrictions on the work of humanitarian and medical organizations, which are trying to contribute to alleviating the diseases spread in the governorate directorates, and looting drugs and medical aid that are supposed to reach the citizens according to many different medical sources.

The World Health Organization said last November that 128 people had died of a cholera epidemic in Ibb governorate out of 1002 people who died of cholera in Yemen from the beginning of this year until the beginning of last November.

Swine influenza in Sanaa

The number of deaths and injuries rose to 49 cases with the swine influenza virus (H1N1) in the capital Sana'a, which is controlled by the Houthi militia.

The website "Al-Thawra Net" reported from medical sources in Sanaa that two new deaths and 8 suspected infections with the swine influenza virus (H1N1) were recorded, bringing the number of deaths and injuries resulting from this disease to 49 deaths and injuries within eight days.

The sources explained that the new cases were recorded in the statements of the General Administration of Disease Control and Epidemiological Surveillance on Saturday, with expectations of more cases being recorded in the absence of any procedures to confront this disease that killed 10 people and infected 39 others since the beginning of this December.

The sources added that the capital's hospitals were unable to diagnose the disease due to the lack of diagnostic capabilities to do so, but that the infected people carry symptoms of swine influenza such as persistent fever, chills, cough, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, redness and tears, along with body pain, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
